Readings for 12/5

Three Interesting Things:
1.) I find it interesting that Big Data has been there for a while and there is a mass amount of it but yet it has just started being used. The solution to the healthcare industry's problem has been right in front of them but they struggled to grasp it and convert it to useful knowledge.
2.) I think that it is interesting that an underlying problem continuously brought up in class is the "fee for service" model that is currently in the system. This problem leads to malpractice of medicine as well as over use of treatment in order to make a quick buck. Having Big Data will allow for the industry to defer from this and provide the care that is needed for the specific patient and the physicians will be compensated on this. The more positive outcomes they have the more money they will make. This will decrease medical errors and sending which will ultimately aid the systems defaults now.
3.) I think it is interesting that clinical trials have had such limitations that hinder their success. This is in terms of the small population they can use for their trials as well as the lack of outcome information they receive. This is what drives the fact that they take so long because they do not have the proper information they need to understand their patients and how they pair with certain drugs. They have to go with the flow and figure it out as they go which is why this drug development process can take up to 15 years to finish. If they had more access to extended RWD/RWE then they would know this information before hand which could cut down their costs and timing tremendously.

Three Questions:
1.) How do you get access to Big Data? Where is it? Is it an open platform? Who owns it?
2.) How does Big Data tackle the privacy issue?
3.) Can pharmacies or physician use Big Data to figure out when a patient should seek out MTM?
4.) How do RWE and Big Data differ? Is RWE a subset of Big Data?
5.) What other systems does the 92% of data left to find reside in other than EHR?
